Arizona’s top legislative Republicans sued President Biden, claiming he overstepped his authority with the designation of a new national monument near the Grand Canyon.

Senate President Warren Petersen and House Speaker Ben Toma filed the lawsuit, arguing the designation under the 1906 Antiquities Act exceeded Biden’s legal authority and was not focused on preserving objects of historic or scientific value. The designation protects 1,562 square miles near Grand Canyon National Park, a move opposed by Republican lawmakers and the uranium mining industry citing economic and national security concerns.
