Austrian glaciers are rapidly receding and the country is projected to be largely ice-free in 40 to 45 years, according to experts.

Experts report that Austrian glaciers are experiencing one of the fastest receding rates in history, with all but one of the 93 measured glaciers shrinking in 2022-2023. The Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier, shrank by a record 203.5 meters. The continuous rapid melting, attributed largely to warmer melting periods, is deemed unstoppable, with a prediction that Austria will be mostly ice-free in the coming decades.
