Global Warming Accelerates Toward Dangerous Threshold
The UN report indicates that the world is on track to exceed the Paris agreement's 1.5 degrees Celsius limit, with current projections suggesting a rise to 2.5-2.9 degrees Celsius.
The latest UN Environment Programme's Emissions Gap report shows the world is heading towards a global temperature increase of 2.5 to 2.9 degrees Celsius, overshooting the Paris agreement's 1.5-degree goal. Despite a need for a 42% emissions reduction by 2030, carbon emissions increased last year, and only nine countries have updated their reduction targets in the past two years. The Inflation Reduction Act in the US is projected to cut emissions by about 1 billion metric tons by 2030, but a vast emissions gap of 24 billion metric tons remains to meet the 1.5-degree target, reducing the likelihood of staying under this threshold to about 14%.
